Embrace Your Weird
Have you ever felt like you didn’t fit in? Like everyone in the world exists at a 90° angle and you’re living at 45°? Did it make you feel insecure? Like no one could ever truly understand you? Like you were born with some inherent flaw? Like the core of you was made of some entirely different substrate than those who you were forced to interact with when you left your home?
Reality check: You are not alone. You are not a freak. There is nothing wrong with you. There is no missing piece. Everything you need to survive, thrive, and be happy is within you. Right now. The things that make us feel deeply alone are the things that will deeply connect us to others. Take comfort in the fact that anything you’ve gone through, someone else has gone through too. Even when it feels impossible, you’re never truly alone. We, as humans, crave connection, so why do we hide the things that make us feel alone? We’re all weirdos. You just need to try and find people who are the same kind of weird as you, and hold on tight.
Can you imagine a world with no weirdos? How bland and boring our lives would be without art, music, movies…. because there’s no perfect Stepford wife making meaningful art. There’s no perfect Stepford wife, period. Weirdos make the world go round. Do you know what a better word is for a weirdo? Innovator. Leonardo da Vinci, in his time, was considered to be very strange indeed, but he quite literally changed the world. He saw things in new ways that man hadn’t even considered. Pablo Picasso. Nikola Tesla. Henry David Thoreau. Vincent van Gogh. John Lennon. Galileo Galilei. Hedy Lamarr. Salvador Dali. Kurt Cobain. Frida Kahlo. I could go on forever… Thank God for weird!
Today is the day, friends. Whatever is in your heart, go for it. There’s never going to be a perfect moment to make your next big creative move. You never arrive. You’re always evolving, learning, and changing. Every day. We are all the culmination of every moment behind us. Let’s stop hiding our weirdness. Let your freak flag fly. Embrace your weird.
